Slovak RepublicSlovenska Republika known as the Slovak Republic or as Slovakia officially came into existence on January 1, 1993 upon receiving independence from Czechoslovakia. The Slovak Republic is located in Central Europe bordering on Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine and is known as the"Country at the Heart of Europe.". Bratislava is its capital and largest city. Slovakia’s total area is about 48,845 sq km where the country’s maximum length from east to west is about 416 km, and its maximum width from north to south is about 208 km. It boasts rugged mountains in its central and northern regions, whereas the southern region is made up of fertile lowlands. Slovakia has a continental climate, with four distinct seasons. The Slovaks are descendants of the Slavic people and comprise about 86 percent of the country’s inhabitants; Hungarians, who constitute the largest minority group, comprise close to 11 percent. There is a population of approximately 5.3 million. Slovak, is the official language of Slovakia; and is closely related to the Czech language. Hungarian is also widely spoken.; In October 1993 Slovakia became an associate member of the European Union (EU), and in 1995 the country applied for EU membership and formal negotiations were started in 1999. Eligibility for RegistrationThere are no requirements concerning local ownership or participation in ownership, in order to apply for registration of a vessel in Slovak Republic. The Registry is open to many types, class, or size of vessel used for navigation that is engaged in any lawful trade, service or international maritime activity. However, fishing vessels, passenger vessels and ferry boats are not accepted for registration.
